The Method: One Formula, Every Time

Loading a barbell in kg comes down to a single repeatable process. A bar is symmetrical, so you only ever calculate one side and mirror it.

  1. Start with the total you want on the bar (say, 180 kg).
  2. Subtract the bar — always 20 kg. That leaves the plate weight: 180 − 20 = 160 kg.
  3. Divide by two. Half the plates go on each sleeve: 160 ÷ 2 = 80 kg per side.
  4. Build that side largest-to-smallest, loading the heaviest plates against the collar first.

A Note on Collars

Competition collars are not the flimsy spring clips from your commercial gym. Regulation collars weigh 2.5 kg each — 5 kg for the pair — and they count toward the total. This trips up lifters who load off a home chart and forget the collars.

The good news: for the standard meet totals below, the math already accounts for the bar, and in competition the loading crew handles the collars. Read down the chart and a pattern jumps out: once you clear 100 kg total, you are stacking blue 20s and filling the gaps with a single green 10 or white 5. That is why experienced lifters count blue plates first — each pair of 20s adds 40 kg to the total. Four blues a side and you are at 180. Six a side and you are at 260.

Pro tip: on the platform, never count in your head under fatigue. Count the blues, confirm the odd plate, done. If a side has four blue 20s and one green 10, you know it is 90 per side — a 200 kg lift — without doing arithmetic.

Why Train in Kilos at All

The single strongest argument for kg training is removing the conversion tax on meet day. If your training log says 182.5 kg and your opener is 180 kg, you walk to the bar already knowing exactly how it feels. Lifters who train in pounds have to translate 402 lb into "roughly 182.5 kg-ish" while a judge waits — and rounding errors in that moment cost attempts.
